There are several benefits of using nitrogen in the tires of last-mile delivery vehicles like those used by FedEx and Amazon.  One of the main benefits of using nitrogen in tires is that it provides a more stable inflation pressure compared to air.  Air is made up of 78% nitrogen, but it also contains other gases such as oxygen and water vapor, which can cause the tire pressure to fluctuate.  Nitrogen, on the other hand, is a dry gas that is less likely to permeate through the tire walls, resulting in a more consistent tire pressure.  Some of the benefits of nitrogen inflation include:

1. Increased tire life: Nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules, so they are less likely to escape through the tire’s sidewall. This means that tires can maintain their proper inflation for longer periods of time, which results in level tire/road surface contact and longer tire life.
2. Improved fuel efficiency: The average last-mile delivery truck tire is under-inflated by 15 psi.  Nitrogen ensures proper tire inflation which reduces the rolling resistance of a vehicle and can improve fuel efficiency by approximately 4% for every 10 psi underinflated.  That’s 6% fuel economy savings for the average vehicle!
3. Increased safety: Properly inflated tires improves a vehicle’s handling and braking, which increases safety.
4. Reduced maintenance: Nitrogen-inflated tires require less frequent maintenance, such as topping off air pressure, so it can save cost and time for the company.
5. Reduced environmental impact: Proper Nitrogen-inflated tires can reduce the amount of fuel consumed by a vehicle, which can reduce the vehicle’s carbon footprint.
